"The glorious sound of the V8 engine and fine handling... boulevard ride and comfortable interior... the car’s versatility, particularly when combined with a hardtop for winter use... is unique"
Classic Car Weekly - 23 May 2001
The Triumph Stag is one of the most versatile British sportscars ever produced and is now recognised throughout the classic car world as one of the most practical, fun touring cars available.
However, the model was not always quite so popular, plagued by initial problems the Triumph Stag rapidly gained a bad name for reliability in the motoring world. Overheating, electrical problems, blown cylinder head gaskets and overdrive faults all conspired to hide one of the best seventies sportscars from proper acclaim.
One by one the production problems were cured or overcome by good maintenance practise but to a great degree the damage was done - it was not until recently that it has started to receive the accolades the car justly deserves.
Our car, a 1974 version, post-dates the aforementioned production flaws and is a fine, four seat sportscar. With its flexible 3 litre, V8 engine, manual gearbox with overdrive, superb ride and interior appointment, the Stag is an excellent choice for touring and fast roads. As such it is a real option to the refinement and performance of the continental Mercedes 280 SL but has the ready charm of a Triumph sportscar with a dash of seventies nostalgia.
Taking to the wheel of the Stag you will be smitten by its smoothness and unmistakable burble from the exhaust. As Malcolm McKay, motoring journalist for Classic Car Weekly put it: "If you’re looking for fresh air fun for (up to) four grown-ups, with a throbbing V8 under the bonnet, you really can’t beat a Stag..."
